Data security for schools: a practical starting point

Schools hold some of the most sensitive personal data in the country - minors' identity documents, health records, family financial information - usually with no dedicated IT security staff.
Start with five controls: unique logins for every user, role based permissions, encrypted backups taken daily and tested quarterly, an audit trail on financial records, and a written policy on who may export data. Those five cover the overwhelming majority of real incidents we have seen.
